Asphalt Shingle Roofing on a central Kentucky property

Asphalt Shingle Roofing

GAF and CertainTeed architectural shingle installation with manufacturer warranties and certified craftsmanship.

Asphalt Shingle Roofing in Central Kentucky, GAF Certified Installers

Asphalt shingles remain the most practical and cost-effective roofing choice for Kentucky homes. Velkan installs architectural (dimensional) shingles from GAF and CertainTeed, the two largest North American shingle manufacturers, using factory-certified installation techniques that unlock the full manufacturer warranty. We handle the full system: deck prep, ice-and-water shield, synthetic underlayment, shingles, and proper ventilation.

What the job includes

  • GAF Timberline HDZ architectural shingles. Most popular in Kentucky
  • CertainTeed Landmark Series option for premium applications
  • Class 4 impact-resistant shingle upgrade available
  • Full system installation, not just shingles over shingles
  • StainGuard Plus protection against algae streaking
  • Color selection from 30+ options
  • Manufacturer warranty tiers up to 50 years, plus our written workmanship warranty

The problems behind the call

These are what turn up on roofing inspections across Madison and Clark County. If you recognise one of them, that is worth a look before it becomes the next one down the list.

  • Old 3-tab shingles at end of lifespan (20-25 years)
  • Post-storm shingle replacement requiring color match
  • Second layer of shingles that must be torn off per code
  • Improper original installation voiding manufacturer warranty

Every inspection is photographed. The report you get names the component, its condition, and what it needs, so nothing rests on a verbal account of what somebody saw on your roof.

How the work runs

Same order every time, so you always know what happens next and when you are being asked to decide something.

  1. Color Consultation

We provide physical shingle samples so you can see real colors against your home's trim and brick.

  2. Tear-Off

Old shingles, felt, and any damaged decking are removed and disposed of properly.

  3. Deck Prep

Ice-and-water shield at eaves and valleys, synthetic underlayment across the field.

  4. Shingle Installation

Installed per manufacturer specifications, exact nail placement and exposure matter for warranty validity.

  5. Accessory Installation

Ridge cap, hip caps, and all penetration flashing completed to manufacturer spec.

Asphalt Shingle Roofing where you are

The work is the same trade in all three towns and a different problem in each one. Here is what drives it locally.

Richmond

Madison County

Ice damming at the eaves

January, during freeze-thaw

Madison County's hilly terrain pools cold air in the lower neighborhoods, so snowmelt refreezes at the eave and backs water up under the shingles where no amount of surface sealant reaches it.

Winchester

Clark County

Hail bruising, then algae on the north slopes

Hail March to May, algae year-round after

Winchester sits in a corridor that channels storms up from the southwest, and it sits low enough that fog settles in the mornings through spring and fall. The hail cracks the shingle mat; the standing moisture on the north-facing slopes then feeds moss and algae into the damage.

Berea

Madison County

Freezing rain and terrain-driven runoff

Late winter

The Cumberland Plateau foothills load the southern end of the county with freezing rain rather than snow, and the sloped lots around Indian Fort Mountain funnel a whole roof's runoff to a couple of eave points instead of spreading it evenly.

3-tab shingles are a single-layer product with a flat, uniform look and typically 20-25 year lifespan. Architectural (dimensional) shingles use multiple bonded layers creating a layered, textured appearance similar to wood shake. They are heavier, rated to higher wind speeds, and carry longer manufacturer coverage, up to 50 years on the tiers we install. The cost difference is modest, which is why nearly every new install in Kentucky now uses architectural shingles.

In central Kentucky, a quality architectural shingle installation typically lasts 25-35 years with proper ventilation. Kentucky's climate, freeze-thaw cycles in winter, severe hail and UV in spring and summer, is harder on shingles than milder climates. Proper attic ventilation is the single biggest factor in shingle longevity; an overheated attic can cut lifespan by a third.

Technically yes, Kentucky code allows a second layer. But we don't recommend it. Installing over an existing layer traps heat, voids most manufacturer warranties, hides potential decking problems, and adds weight. When you eventually need a full replacement, the cost includes tearing off two layers. Starting fresh is the better long-term investment.
